SOUTHERN RAILWAY

As it's name implied, the Southern Railway covered the southeastern U.S, in particular blanketing the state of Georgia. The SR was notable in recent times for electing to remain out of Amtrak and operating it's own passenger trains until 1979 and for ordering it's diesels with a high short hood, long after other roads adopted the low nose as standard. In 1982 the Southern merged with the Norfolk & Western to produce today's Norfolk Southern.
