Altamont Commuter Express. F40PH-3C #3101 pulls train #5 up Altamont Pass, CA. It's just after dawn on October 21, 2005 and the sun has not yet risen high enough to clear the hilltops to the east.

ACE. Evening train #2 is at the station in Lathrop, CA on October 21, 2005. ACE service started in October of 1998 and runs between San Jose and Stockton.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR. FPA-4 #14 has an excursion train at Pensinsula, OH on August 9, 1997. The CVS runs an ex B&O line from Independence, OH south to Akron along the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation area and the Ohio & Erie Canal.

CVS. FPA-4 #15 leads a southbound train at Brecksville, OH on 8-9-97. The Alco cab units are ex CN diesels.

Grand Canyon Railway. FPA-4 #6793 & 6773 bracket FPB-4 #6871 on the daily excursion train headed south at Red Lake, AZ on February 17, 2001.

GC Rwy. FPA-4 #6793 at the station in Williams, AZ on 2/17/01. The roads Alco cab units came from VIA and were originally built for the Canadian National.

GC Rwy. FPA-4 #6776 & FPB-4 #6871 at the station in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim on May 5, 2004. During the busy summer months the line uses a steam engine on it's trains.

Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway. The M&PP began operations in 1891 under steam and today uses Swiss built diesel railcars. This view of the yard at the base in Manitou Springs, CO on October 3, 2004 clearly shows the cog rail in the middle of the standard gauge tracks.

M&PP Railway is the highest cog railroad in the world. Here at the top of Pike's Peak, 14,110 feet above sea level is Swiss Locomotive Works railcar #18 laying over before the return back down the mountain on 10-3-04.

MARC. In 1981 the Maryland DOT began operating the old B&O and Penn Central commuter services into Baltimore. The first power they purchased were F9PH's , rebuilt from B&O F7's, such as #7185 at GE-Hornell (NY) on May 10, 1981.

MARC. #7185 and 7100 nose to nose at GE-Hornell. Although the F units were rebuilt by M-K at Boise, Hornell had the contract for the passenger cars, so upon completion the units stopped in Hornell for compatibility testing with the cars. #7100 looks like the other F units, but was actually a cab control car.

MARC. GP39H-2 #71 has outbound train #P881 at the beautiful station at Point of Rocks, MD on the evening of June 25, 2007. This unit was a 1987 rebuild of a PC/NYC GP40 by M-K.

MARC. GP40WH-2 #52 slows #P879 for the station stop at Brunswick, MD on June 25, 2007. To the right is WB (West Brunswick) Tower, one of the few operating towers left on ex B&O lines.

Music City Star. F40PH-2's #121, 122 and 381 spend the early afternoon in the yard at Lebanon, TN, the eastern end of the line, on September 20, 2007.

MCS. F40PH-2 #122 is pushing the first train of the afternoon at Lebanon as it heads west to Nashville to pick up outbound commuters. The trains run over 32 miles of Nashville & Eastern (ex Tenn. Central) trackage, but more routes are planned in the future.

MCS. Another westbound with F40PH-2 #121 pushing at Mt.Juliet, TN on 9/20/07. Service started in September 2006 and consists of weekday morning and evening service at present.

MCS. F40PH-2 #121 has just left the siding after meeting an eastbound as it pushes westbound across a street among a crowd of signals at Donelson, TN on September 21, 2007. All of the F40's are ex-Amtrak units.

New Mexico Rail Runner. MP36PH-3C #105 is boarding train #511 at Albuquerque, NM on September 11, 2008. Rail Runner service started in 2007 and operates both north and south out of Albuquerque on ex-Santa Fe trackage.

NM Rail Runner. Train #514 is being pushed northbound out of Belen, NM on 9/11/08. Belen is the southern most point of commuter service on the line.

NM Rail Runner. MP36PH-3C #103 powers southbound T#513 past the Manzano Mountains near Los Lunas, NM on September 11, 2008.

NM Rail Runner. #103 stopped in front of the Los Lunas station. Built by Motive Power, Inc, the MP36's produce 3600 hp from an EMD engine and are becoming the standard N.American commuter engine.

Niagara & Western New York. This short-lived tourist line operated for one season over the tracks of the shortline Falls Road RR. Here the eastbound train passes an old cannery at Gasport, NY in this fruit belt region south of Lake Ontario.

N&WNY. U18B's #404 & 407 were leased from Guilford and repainted into their original Maine Central colors and operated push-pull on trains as seen here at Middleport, NY on August 25, 2002.

N&WNY. U18B #406 arrives at the old NYC station in Medina, NY, made of locally quarried Medina Sandstone, and the endpoint of the run. The riders will visit the town and then reboard for the trip back to Lockport.

N&WNY. GP7u #592 (also from Guilford) was utilized as a backup engine as seen here just west of the station in Medina, NY on 8/22/02. The N&WNY could not come to terms with the Falls Road RR for continued operations for the following year, and the diesels were returned to Guilford.

Port Authority of Allegheny County. In the mid 1970's the PAT began operations of the ex B&O commuter trains from Pittsburgh to Versailles, PA. Two F7's from the WA&G (ex SP) were purchased and refurbed at GE-Hornell. Here is the #6691 laying over on the weekend at Glenwood Yard in Pittsburgh on 6/6/81.

PAT. Several ex-B&O RDC-1's were also utilized as shown here at the Grant St. station on June 6, 1981. The service was discontinued in April of 1989.

Rail Develpment Corp. Chinese built 2-10-2's #6988 and #7081 were purchased by RDC (with an option on 3 others) for resale in the U.S. To showcase the locomotives for potential buyers they ran several fantrips Sept. 14-17. Here #6988 steams under the Centennial bridge in Rock Island, IL on September 16, 2006.

RDC . Used to storming up Jingpeng Pass in Mongolia, the #6988 leading the #7081 and Milwaukee 4-8-4 #261 smoke it up as it pulls down to the passenger loading area in Rock Island. Today's trip was eastbound over the Iowa Interstate (also owned by RDC).

RDC. The triple header led by the two QJ's pulls out of Rock Island past the old Amory and the Centennial Bridge spanning the Mississippi in the background.

RDC. The train continues east through the city on 9/16/06. The QJ's were built in 1985-86 as compared to the 1944 era Milwaukee Road engine.

Sound Transit. F59PHI #911 leads T#1505 south at Sumner, WA on July 19, 2007. Sounder runs 4 morning and 4 evening trains on this route to Tacoma each weekday and 2 roundtrips a day north to Everett, WA.

Sounder. The last morning train of the day, T#1506 is headed north coming off of the old Milwaukee Road trestle in Tacoma, WA on July 20, 2007. #908 is pushing at the other end.

Sounder. F59PHI #908 is laying over at Freight House Square in Tacoma, WA on a rainy Saturday July 21, 2007.Sounder does not currently run weekend service, other than specials for sporting events.

Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority. After years of subsidizing Grand Trunk Western commuter service, SEMTA in 1977 purchased the equipment. Here are GP18 #901 and GP9 #905 at Detroit, MI on May 22, 1981.

SEMTA. GP18 #903 awaits the evening rush at Detroit, MI on 5/22/81. Due to low ridership the commuter trains were terminated in October 1983 and the equipment sold off.

SEMTA commuter trains terminated at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit and ran out to Pontiac, MI on GTW trackage.

Virginia Railway Express. A GP39-2C pushes morning train #308 north over the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, VA on August 6, 2004. The VRE began service in 1992 over two routes from Washington, DC, the NS line to Manaassas, VA and the CSX (ex RF&P) line to Fredericksburg, pictured here.
