MISCELLANEOUS SHORTLINES
(M thru N)

On this page are shortlines or regionals with only one, two or three pictures. Roads are presented in alphabetical order.

misc822a.jpg

Maryland & Pennsylvania. NW2 #85 switching at York, PA on September 22, 1980. The MA&PA was absorbed by sister road Yorkrail, who in turn was absorbed by the G&W family of shortlines in 2002.

misc823a.jpg

MA & PA NW2 #81 is switching a string of the lines blue 50' boxcars at York, PA on 9/22/80.

misc30789c.jpg

Massachusetts Central. C424 #4264 with a cut of cars at Palmer, MA on April 28, 2000. The Mass Central began operation in 1979 over a Conrail (ex NYC) branch from Palmer to South Barre, MA that was purchased by the State of Massachusetts.

misc30789d .jpg

MCER. C424 #4263 is on the Adirondack Scenic RR at Utica, NY on November 4, 2000 after being sold by the MCER. Both of the big Alcos were ex-BN units obtained via the Arkansas & Missouri (the #4264 is now on the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville).

misc30790a.jpg

MCER. GP9u #960 is switching out cars at Ware, MA on January 26, 2010. This unit is an ex-Milwaukee Road rebuild (MILW called them "GP20s").

misc30788a .jpg

MCER. Rare NW5 #2100 sits at the intermodal facility in Palmer, MA on January 11, 1996. The NW5 was an elongated NW2 switcher with a short hood. Only 13 were built, and this one was the ex-Southern RR #2100, a one unit order for the Southern that spent most of it's time assigned to New Orleans.

misc50964c.jpg

Meridian & Bigbee. GP38 #4999 (ex GTW) pulls out over the Sowashee Creek bridge at Meridian, MS on June 10, 2005. Trailing units are from fellow Rail Management Associates lines, a Georgia Central U23B and a Bay Line GP38.

misc50963b.jpg

M&B. Earlier power on the line was represented by GP10 #107 out back of the shop in Meridian, MS on 6/10/05. Just days earlier the RMA group of shortlines (with the exception of the Copper Basin Rwy.)was sold to Genesee & Wyoming Corp.

misc40945c.jpg

Milford-Bennington RR. SW900 #901 pulls a train at Richardson, NH on September 28, 2000. The M-B hauls crushed rock from a quarry at Lydonborough 8 miles to Granite State Concrete in Milford, NH, and makes several runs each weekday.

misc40945a.jpg

M-B. As there are no run-around facilities at either end, the train runs backwards in one direction using this ex Conrail caboose, #21288 which has been equipped with a headlight, horn and bell.

misc40945g.jpg

M-B. The train comes over a bridge and under the remains of a telltale at Wilton, NH on 9/28/00. The State of NH owns part of the line, Guilford the balance and each carrier has trackage rights over the others portion.

misc70460e.jpg

simple_new_green.gifMinnesota Southern. GP9u #1365 and GP7u #1379 are at the lines HQ in Luverne, MN on Sept. 18, 2010. The MS has operated this line since 2001, which is owned by the Buffalo Ridge Rail Authority. Prior to the MS there were several operators of the line after it's 1988 sale by the C&NW.

misc20935a.jpg

Minnesota Valley. SD24 #904 and SD35 #322 are westbound at Bongards, MN on August 18, 1994. The train is on Twin Cities & Western trackage here and is moving along at a respectable speed....that would soon change.

misc20935e.jpg

MV. The train is now on it's own line at Hamburg, MN and train speed is down to a crawl as the train rocks and rolls it's way on the miserable track. This is one of the few times I feared for my safety and moved far back from the tracks after getting my shots, for the train was about to traverse.........

misc20935d.jpg

MV. Possibly the most rancid running track I have ever seen, including Penn Central trackage. This shot is taken in the opposite direction from the preceding one. Not suprisingly the MV gave up operations on this ex C&NW line that December. Pioneer RailCorp operated it as their Minnesota Central for a while, and today it is run as a division of the TC&W.

misc50850a.jpg

Mississippi Export RR. The majority of the MSE roster is lined up outside the shop at Moss Point, MS on June 7, 2003. GP38-2's #66, 65, SW1500 #64 and GP40 #95. Note that the class lights have been blanked out and replaced with the units road number.

misc961a.jpg

Monongahela Railway. GP7's #1502, 1500 & 1504 at Brownsville, PA on Sept. 20, 1980. The Monongahela was jointly owned by the Pennsy, P&LE and B&O and ran south out of Brownsville, PA to serve the coalfields of southwest PA and northern W.Virginia. Cash strapped P&LE sold it's share to Conrail in 1989 and CSX sold it's B&O share to Conrail in 1990, who then absorbed the Monongahela in 1993.

misc960c.jpg

Monongahela. GP38 #2001 at Brownsville on 9/20/80 was one of 5 heavily ballasted units built in 1969, at that time the heaviest GP38's ever built. Until the GE Super 7's arrived all of the road's units wore this uninspired NYC style black paint, but the line was noted for it's earlier roster of Baldwin S-12's and ex-NYC Baldwin sharknoses, 2 of which later went to the D&H.

misc11750a.jpg

Mountain Laurel RR. GP10's #16 and 17 are at the P&S shops in Brookville, PA on July 24, 1994. The Mtn. Laurel was owned by the Pittsburg & Shawmut and was created in December 1991 from ex Conrail trackage using 6 of these ex IC Paducah rebuilds.

misc11752a.jpg

Mtn. Laurel. After the G&W bought the Mtn. Laurel and the P&S in 1996 some units were transferred to other G&W roads, such as GP10 #13 (ex IC #8119) shown here on the Louisiana & Delta at New Iberia, LA on March 17, 2001.

misc988a.jpg

Montour RR. SW9's #77, 76 and 78 are lined up outside the shops of this little coal-hauler at Coraopolis, PA on September 20, 1980. #76 is still in it's bicenntenial paint scheme.

misc990c.jpg

Montour RR. SW9's #73 and 84 are at Coraopolis, PA on October 19, 1980. The Montour was wholly owned by the P&LE by this time (at one time the PC owned 50%).

misc990e.jpg

Montour RR. SW9's #84 and 81 at Coraopolis, PA on 10/19/80. When the online mines shut down, operations were suspended in 1983 and the line abandoned in 1986.

misc50790a.jpg

Nebraska Central. GP7u #2106 and GP38m #4202 with a train at the UP connection in Central City, NE on July 26, 2002. The NECT runs several disconnected branches off the UP main, with this one extending 62 miles to Brainard.

misc50791a.jpg

NECT. GP38m #4201 and GP7u #2106 (a Sante Fe rebuild) are lined up at Grand Island, NE on October 4, 2002. The railroad started up operations in 1993 over several ex-Union Pacific branches within the state.

misc40940b.jpg

New England Southern. GP18 #503 is propped up on wooden blocks while it's rear truck assembly is in the shop at Concord, NH on Sept. 28, 2000. The NEGS operates several ex B&M lines and also had an ex Conrail GP10 for power.

misc40936c.jpg

New Hampshire Northcoast. GP9's #1757, 1755, 1756 & 1759 are northbound skirting Northeast Pond at Milton, NH on August 16, 2002. The company operates a 53 mile ex-B&M branch.

misc40936g.jpg

NHN. The train of empy hoppers continues north at Wakefield, NH. The line is owned by it's largest shipper, Ossipee Aggregates who bought the branch in 1987 to preserve rail service to their quarry.

misc40935d.jpg

NHN. Providing a preview of the future, leased GP38's #2047, 2019 & 2051 assist NHN GP9's #1758 & 1759 northbound at Rollingsford, NH on June 16, 2001. Though these ex-CSX work train "pumpkins" would be returned, newer GP38-2's would return permanently about 5 years later.

misc40971d.jpg

New Orleans Public Belt. MP2000D #2001 and MP1500D #1501 are south of downtown New Orleans on March 16, 2001. The NOPB is owned by the city who also own the Huey Long Railway bridge across the Mississippi.

misc40971e.jpg

NOPB. SW1500 #151 sticks its front end out of the roundhouse in New Orleans on 3/16/01. The NOPB was powered by these SW1500's and SW1001's exclusively until the arrival of the M-K's.

misc981d.jpg

Nicholson Terminal & Dock. A rare Lima LS-750, #22 pauses at Ecorse MI on September 11, 1979. In a salute to the bicentennial, the unit has had white and red stars added to the hood and surrounding the headlight.

misc829a.jpg

Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt. SW1200's #104 and 103 are at Portsmouth, VA on September 24, 1980. Though still in existence, the N&PB today is invisible to most fans as they now use NS diesels to perform all work.

misc829c.jpg

N&PB. SW1200 #106 pulls a cut of cars past the roads shop buildings in Portsmouth, VA on 9/24/80. Note the distinctive flashing light mounted high on the cab roof.

misc10800e.jpg

North Louisiana & Gulf. The daily freight is headed north nearing Gibsland, LA on September 21, 1983. MP15's #42 & 43 are bracketing an ex Rock Island slug #50. Stone Container sold the line to the Midsouth RR who sold off the MP15's. Midsouth itself was later bought by the KCS who spun off the line to the Louisiana Southern.

misc10800i.jpg

NL&G. The train backs a cut of cars onto an interchange track at Gibsland, past the shops of the Louisiana & Northwest and one of their F7's and a side-door caboose. September 21, 1983.
