Acadiana Railway. GP30 #701 is at the road's shops in Opelousas, LA on June 11, 2005. The railroad started in 1990 and operates three disconnected lines in Louisiana. This unit is the ex UP #701.

Acadiana. Their other GP30 (ex Rio Grande) is on Eunice branch at Crowley, LA on 6/11/05. This unit wears the roads current colors which are similar to the C&NW's.

Acadiana. "Needs a little work" is the description of NW2 #102 at Opelousas, LA on 6/11/05. The radiator has been removed leaving only the sand box fills on the front of the frame.

Akron & Barberton Belt. SW1200 #1203 sits outside the company's shops in Barberton, OH on July 12, 1992. The A&BB was co-owned by Conrail, Chessie and NS.

A&BB. SW1200 #1203 and SW1500 #1502 are switching at Akron, OH on August 9, 1997. The lines third unit was also an SW1500, both of which were ex Conrail units, originally built for the Indianapolis Union RR.

A&BB caboose #82101 at the yard in Barberton, OH on July 12, 1992, is an ex LV car. The A&BB was bought by the W&LE in 1994 who renamed the assets the Akron Barberton Cluster Railway.

Albany Port District RR. S-2 #5 is at the D&H Shops in Watervliet, NY on August 27, 1976 for heavy maintainence. The ex-D&H #3011 served the road from 1963 to 1986.

Albany Port RR. Three decades later, the name and the power have changed. APR SW9 #12 switches the Albany, NY port area on July 17, 1997. The color scheme is also greatly improved.

Algers Winslow & Western. This 16 mile shortline existed to haul coal in southern Indiana and interchanged with the Southern and Conrail. RS-1 #4 is at Oakland City, IN on July 26, 1980.

AW&W. S-4 #1 is at the Oakland City, IN shops on July 26, 1980. The company was co-owned by Southern Rwy (later NS) and Old Ben Coal Co (later Horizon Natural Resources, then American Metals & Coal). In March 2007 NS gained full control and black NS diesels now ply the line.

AW&W. Newer, larger power came to the AW&W in the form of four ex Central of Georgia SD9's from half parent Southern. #203 at Oakland City on September 24, 1989 shows how the Southern scheme was modified on the AW&W.

Apalachicola Northern. GP15T #720 rests at the shops in Port St. Joe, FL on May 13, 2006. The roads three GP15T's were purchased new to help power unit coal trains that began running in 1982 from the port at Port St. Joe, 96 miles along the length of the AN to the CSX at Chattahoochie, FL. From there CSX took the coal to a power plant in Palatka, FL.

AN. SW1500 #716 is on sister G&W line, Chattachoochie Industrial at Saffold, GA on 5/13/06. The AN was owned by St. Joe Paper Co. for most of the 20th century, until being sold to the Rail Management group of shortlines, who were in turn acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in 2005. Activity on the AN is way down due to the loss of their two major traffic sources....the closure of the paper mill and the loss of the unit coal train contract, leading to units being moved off-line to other G&W properties, as in this case.

Arkansas & Louisiana Missouri. Spotless NW2# 10 and a side door caboose are at Monroe, LA on Sept. 22, 1983. #10 was the oldest unit on the 4 diesel roster at the time. In 1992 Georia-Pacific bought the road and renamed it the Arkansas, Louisiana & Mississippi.

Austin, Todd & Ladd. The AT&L is not named after any online towns, rather these are the names of the owner's grandsons. CF7# 2491, GP7u #2165 and GP9 #1948 are at Geary, OK on July 17, 2003.

AT&L. At the northern end of this ex Rock Island line, SW1200 #1127 is switching a grain elevator. Agriculture is the primary business of this shortline. Watonga, OK on July 17, 2003.

Baltimore & Annapolis. SW9 #87 on the Carolina Southern at Chadbourn, NC on 10/18/03. An ex-interurban line between it's namesake cities, passenger service ended in 1950 and the B&A cut back to 6 miles with a GE 70T (now at the B&O Museum) as sole power. A change of ownership in 1984 brought this unit, in use until abandonment in 1991, though part of the line is used today for a light rail line.

Bellefonte Central. SW9 #5323 outside of the lines's shops on July 20, 1976. The line was cut back from 18 miles to 5 miles in 1975, sold to Kyle, and the rest abandoned in 1983. A small portion to this enginehouse is in service today for the Nittnany & Bald Eagle.

BC SW1200 #5624 is working the Conrail interchange at Bellefonte, PA on 7/20/76. The roads seemingly random 4 digit numbers actually had a logic to them, the first 2 digits being the year the locomotive was acquired, the second 2 digits a sequence number, hence #5624 was the line's 24th locomotive, acquired in 1956.

British Columbia Hydro RR. SW900 #907 is switching at New Westminster, BC on a rainy May 25, 1984.

BCH. MP15DC #153 idles in front of the railroads shop at New Westminster on May 25, 1984. This railroad is now known as the Southern Railway of British Columbia and is under the same ownership as Montana Rail Link.

Burlington Junction Railway. C415 #702 is switching a customer on the north side of Burlington, IA on August 22, 2008. The BJR began operations in 1985 over a couple of miles of ex-Rock Island trackage in the Burlington area.

BJR. C415 #702, an ex-SP unit with the high cab option, is switching the interchange with the BNSF in downtown Burlington. The bridge in the background carries Route 34 over the Mississippi River.

Central Michigan. GP7u #9210 is outside of the small enginehouse at Bay City, MI on July 24, 1998. The CM took over operations on a group of ex Conrail and GTW lines in 1987.

CM U23B's #8904 and 8903 lead a southbound freight near Durand MI on July 24, 1998. The U Boats are ex Missouri Pacific units.

CM GP40-2LW #8904 is an ex CN unit and is pumping up air pressure at Durand, MI on 7/24/98. The CM was acquired by the Rail America family of short lines in 2004.

Central New England. Sharp looking GP20 #3006 (ex-Santa Fe) at the end of the line in Bloomfield, CT on June 30, 2000. The CNE operates two disconnected ex-New Haven lines in the Hartford, CT area. The state owns the trackage.

CNE. RS-1 #0670 in restored New Haven colors at Bloomfield, CT on December 3, 1999. This 8 mile line runs south to Hartford and is the busier of the two, serving a large Home Depot distribution center. The other 13 mile line runs out of S. Windsor.

Chicago Short Line. SW1001 #29 is switching on this little line tucked into the south side of Chicago, IL on April 2, 1977. In 2003 the railroad became known as the South Chicago & Indiana Harbor RR.

CSL SW1500 #30 and SW1001 #29 rest at the shops off 98th Street in Chicago on 3/23/01. The lines four unit roster is washed and waxed on an annual basis and consequently have never been repainted.

Chicago, West Pullman & Southern. SW8 #43 at Chicago, IL April 2, 1977 exhibits the red-white scheme used during the time this rail line on the southeast side of Chicago was owned by International Harvester.

CWP&S. Several years later SW8 #43 and SW1 #39 are in the newer blue-white colors at the shops on 104th Street in Chicago, IL May 26, 1981. #43 was bought new by the line and continues to operate over this trackage today.

CWP&S. Caboose #207 at S. Chicago, IL on June 16, 1986. When traffic declined, the road was sold to Omnitrax who today operates it as part of their Chicago Rail Link operation.

simple_new_green.gifClaremont Concord RR. GE 44T #30 is at the shops in Claremont Jct, NH on August 4, 2001. The CC operates about 2 miles of track from here to Claremont, and took over from the Claremont & Concord RR which once operated 62 miles of track in NH.

simple_new_green.gifCCRR. S-4 #104 is at West Lebanon, NH on September 28, 2002. Around 2000 the CC expanded as operator of the state owned ex-B&M line from White River Jct, VT across the river to West Lebanon, NH. This unit came from another New England shortline, the Quincy Bay Terminal RR near Boston.

Connecticut Central. GP9 #53 leads NX-1 gingerly down the temporary shoo-fly across Route 66 in Middleton, CT on February 19, 1996. In the background is the elevated grade leading to the new bridge being built as part of the widening of the state highway.

Conn Central. S-4 #36 (ex Genesee & Wyoming, note the orange radiator) at Middletown on March 12, 1996. The CC started life in 1987 operating a cluster of Conrail (ex NH) lines radiating from Middletown and was later taken over by the Providence & Worcester who have since reopened the dormant branch north into Hartford.

Council Bluffs Railway. GP7u #714 is at the yard in Council Bluffs, IA (across the river from Omaha) on July 26, 2002. The CBRwy was a terminal road operating ex N&W (Wabash) trackage and was owned by Omnitrax until sold to Iowa Interstate.
