Dakota Southern. SD9E #4427 (ex SP) sits at Mitchell, SD on July 19, 2008. The company has the operating rights on the state owned 187 mile line from Mitchell west to Kadoka that was once part of the Milwaukee Road's line to Rapid City, SD. Most operations are in the Mitchell area with the western end of the line being inactive for several years.

Dansville & Mt. Morris. The last GE 44 tonner built was D&MM #1 built 10/19/56, here at Dansville, NY on July 22, 1975. The D&MM ran from Dansville, NY north 8 miles on 60 and 90 lb. rail to a connection with the Lackawanna RR mainline at Groveland, NY.

D&MM. Their other diesel was GE 44T #2, which was built for the nearby Bath & Hammondsport and acquired in 1971 when that road bought a couple of Alco switchers. The unit sits in the modest cinder block enginhouse in Dansville on June 6, 1975.

D&MM. After the E-L merger the Lackawanna mainline over Dansville hill was abandoned. The north end was tied into the Attica branch and operated south through Greigsville (interchange with the Genesee & Wyoming) and on to Groveland and the D&MM. In 1982 the G&W acquired the ex-DL&W from Greigsville south and in 1985 the connecting D&MM, and continues to operate it today. The track was upgraded and the little GE's moved to the G&W shops at Retsof, NY (as #2 is seen here on Nov. 3, 1985) and sold off.

Dardanelle & Russellville. S-1 #18 at N.Dardanelle, AR on May 31, 2009. The 5 mile shortline was built in 1883 to connect Dardanelle on the Arkansas River with what would become the Mopac at Russellville and connections to the outside world.

D&R. S-3 #19 undergoing work at N.Dardanelle, AR on 5/31/09. Acquired in 1989 this unit was Fordyce & Princeton #662 and had several owners prior to that. #18 shown above also came in 1989, from the Cadiz RR when that line shut down in 1988.

D&R. SW1 #16 and GMD1 #1143. The little EMD came from the Mopac in 1968. The ex-CN unit was one of several acquired by the present owners for use on other lines they have operated.

Davenport, Rock Island & Northwestern. Co-owned by the Burlington Northern and the Milwaukee (later SOO Line) this terminal road served the Quad Cities area until broken up by it's owners in June of 1995. Here is SW1200 #602 at Davenport, IA on May 21, 1979.

DRI&NW. SW1200's #602 & 109 move a short train through Rock Island, IL on September 10, 1993. Owning roads BN and MILW both contributed locomotives to the "Dry Line" where they retained their former numbers and a similar paint scheme with white in place of orange or green.

Delta Southern. CF7 #107 heads a short train, shut down for the day near McGehee, AR on May 28, 2009. The Delta Southern operates this ex-MP line (acquired from the UP in 1989) from McGehee south 103 miles to Tallulah, LA, but the middle section from Lake Village, AR to Lake Providence, LA is out of service.

DSRR. CF7 #106 on the siding at Macon Lake, AR shows the overgrown "main line" which consists of 85 lb. rail. The Delta Southern is 100% CF7 powered and is owned National Railway Equipment Co.

DSRR. CF7's #104 & #101 are at Mansford, LA on the southern section of the line on May 29, 2009. This section serves a Mississippi River transfer terminal. A third disconnected line is operated from Monroe, LA 15 miles to Sterlington, also an ex-MP line.

Detroit & Toledo Shore Line. The D&TSL was owned 50-50 by GTW and N&W (ex NKP) and perpetuated the Nickel Plate colors on it's fleet of ten GP7's and six SW7/SW9's. The GTW bought out N&W's share in 1981 and merged the line into itself. Here are the #49 & 45 at Pt.Huron, MI on 5/22/79.

simple_new_green.gifDuluth & Northeastern. SW1 #31 is switching about the yard in Cloquet, MN on September 15, 1982. Started as a logging railroad it was cut back to a switching line for owner Potlach's paper mill in Cloquet.

simple_new_green.gifD&NE. Beautifully maintained caboose #07 at Cloquet, MN on 9/14/82. In 2002 Sappi Paper took over operations of the mill and the railroad and changed it's name to the Cloquet Terminal RR.

El Dorado & Wesson. S-2 #20 sits at El Dorado, AR on September 22, 1983. The E&W is an old time shortline (not a spinoff) that runs about 5 miles to Newell, AR. Today the E&W runs with a pair of EMD's.

E&W. Another S-2, #21 is in the open ended shop at El Dorado, AR, 9/22/83. At El Dorado a connection was made with the Mopac at the time of this picture, now the UP.

Ellis & Eastern. SW900 #17 and SW1200 #7 are headed west on the eastern edge of Sioux Falls, SD on July 18, 2008. The E&E runs 16 miles of former C&NW trackage from Sioux Falls west to Ellis and east to Brandon, SD, hauling mainly aggregates and cement.

E&E. The train continues west past the quarries and cement plants on the east side of town. The track coming in at this switch is the BNSF line that connects to the Omaha-Twin Cities route at Garretson. The two railroads share the track here for about a mile then split on the west side of the I-229 overpass.

E&E. SW900 #17 and SW1200 #7 are pulling stone loads on the west side of Sioux Falls, SD near the County Fair Grounds on the morning of September 17, 2010.

Erie Western. RS-3's #1600 & 1601 are at Huntington, IN on May 18, 1979. The EW took over 158 miles of the ex Erie-Lackawanna mainline from Hammond, IN to Wren, OH unwanted by Conrail. The company lasted less than 2 years, from 9/77 to 6/79.

EW RS-3 #1602 at Huntington, IN on 5/18/79. The roads RS-3's came from the C&NW. The EW also leased a couple of ex Long Island C420's, one of which is visible in the background here.

Everett Railroad. SW9 #8933 and GP7 #5428 are tied down at the shop in Claysburg, PA on November 28, 1999. The Everett first began operations in 1984 over ex-Conrail trackage and has grown to become a 23 mile carrier today. Both of these units are off the roster today, replaced with a GP10 and two GP16's.

Fairport, Painesville & Eastern. S-2's #102 & 107 are switching at Fairport, OH on June 24, 1975. The FP&E was co-owned by N&W and PC (NYC) and stabled a small fleet of Alco S-2 and S-4 switchers, some of which came from the N&W.

FP&E. Lined up in the roundhouse at Fairport, OH are S-4, #105, S-2 #104 and S-4 #108 on 6/24/75. The FP&E was absorbed by parent NS in 1984

Falls Creek RR. S-2 #61 is at Eden, NY on August 15, 1992. The Falls Creek started in 7/81 over 5 miles of an ex-Pennsy line that ran parallel to the B&O from Falls Creek, PA to McMinns Summit in north-central PA, where a coal loadout was located. The line ceased operations in 1988.

FC. S-2 #62 at McMinns, PA on April 9, 1988. Both Alcos' (a CF7 was also used) were ex-Long Island units and transferred from other Northmont Industries lines in PA, #62 being Mercersburg RR #2 and #61 being the Lykens Valley #1 (both lines only ran for a short time, 1978-1981).

Florida West Coast. GP18 #1337 is at Trenton, FL on April 18, 2002. The FWC was formed in 12/87 to take over the ex-ACL line of CSX from Newberry west to Cross City and a branch south to Chiefland. It was later cut back to 13 miles from Newberry to Trenton and most recently only provides local service at Newberry.

Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville. S-2 #20 is at the Penn Central interchange in Fonda, NY on July 8, 1975. The FJ&G was sold to the Delaware Otsego Corp.(parent company of the NYS&W) in 1974 and abandoned in 1984 when it's remaining online traffic dried up.

Fort Smith RR. RS-3m #7802 is at Fort Smith, AR on September 18, 1992. The railroad began operations the previous year (1991) leasing a 17 mile ex-Mopac line extending from Fort Smith 17 miles to Fort Chaffee, AR from the Union Pacific.

Ft. Smith RR. Several years later the re-engined Alco is gone, replaced by GP9's #1902 & 1791 on the right and GP7u #1602 in owner Pioneer Railcorp's corporate colors. May 14, 1999.
