MASSACHUSETTS BAY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY

In 1965 the MBTA (or "T" for short), began financial assistance to Boston area commuter railroads, and in 1973 purchased much of the ex-New Haven and NYC lines from successor Penn Central, which operated into South Station. In 1975 track and equipment from the B&M which operated into North Station was purchased. After Conrail was created in 1976, Big Blue came looking for a larger operating subsidy, so the operating contract was switched to the B&M, and in 1986 was switched to Amtrak, and finally in 2003 to MBCR, a joint partnership of Bombardier, Veolia Transportation and Alternate Concepts Inc.
