Almost all of the IC&E traces it's origins to Milwaukee Road ownership. The Milwaukee was taken over by the SOO Line in 1985 and subsequently parent Canadian Pacific absorbed the SOO. CP decided to sell the 1385 miles of line in April 1997 to I&M Rail Link which was owned by the Washington Corp. who also own the Montana Rail Link and Southern Rwy. of British Columbia. The line had a difficult start-up and Washington Corp. had trouble turning a profit, so they sold the lines in July 2002 to the parent company of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern which connected with it in southern Minnesota. In October 2008 the Canadian Pacific acquired the DM&E and with it the IC&E so ironically the tracks are now back in the CP family.
